RED WINDS is the higher education program at American universities that has finally become a reality: Native American teachers teach Native American students – for the first time since the colonial powers subjugated them. Barney Bush, initiator and “soul” of Red Winds, will speak on October 14th at Castle Primmersdorf in the Waldviertel about “Logic is not always the same”.
Another highlight is the Austrian premiere of “NativeNow!”, a film by Sasha A. Noman and Thomas Steiner. The film takes the audience into the present day of an Indian reservation. The musical program is designed by Freddie Lento and Gerhard Hartl. Start: 6 p.m. Gabriele Haring leads through the evening.

Barney Bush was born on August 27, 1945 in the Vinyard Indian Settlement, Illinois, to the Shawnee tribe. He is the son of the Bear Clan in the Kishpokofa Division, the tribal family that produced the historical leader and teacher Tecumseh.
After finishing high school, Barney Bush hitchhiked across the Americas for several years before enrolling at Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado. After graduating in history and art, he became actively involved with A.I.M. (American Indian Movement).

Barney Bush is a founding member of the Institute of the Southern Plains and teaches extensively at numerous universities and reservations in the United States. In 1980, the University of Idaho awarded him a Master’s Degree in English and Fine Arts.

Barney Bush has published four volumes of poetry since 1975: “Longhouse of the Blackberry Moon”,
“My Horse and a Jukebox”, “Petroglyphs”, and “Inherit the Blood”. His literary work is featured in numerous anthologies, including The Remembered Earth – Territorial Press, Brother Songs – Holy Cow Press, Harper’s Anthology, Native American Poetry – Harper & Row.
Since 1990, two double CDs with the symphonic settings of his poems have been released by Nato Records: “Oyate” (with Tony Hymas, Jeff Beck, Jim Pepper), “The Recreation of the American Dream”.

Barney Bush died in September 2021.

Barney Bush wurde am 27. 8. 1945 im Vinyard Indian Settlement, Illinois, in das Volk der Shawnee geboren. Er ist Sohn des Bear Clan in der Kishpokofa Division, jener Stammesfamilie, aus der auch der historische Führer und Lehrer Tecumseh hervorging.
Nach Beendigung der High School trampte Barney Bush mehrere Jahre lang kreuz und quer durch den amerikanischen Kontinent, bevor er sich am Fort Lewis College, Durango/Colorado einschrieb. Nach der Graduation in Geschichte und Kunst begann sein aktives Engagement bei A.I.M. (American Indian Movement).

Barney Bush ist Gründungsmitglied des Institut of the Southern Plains und übt eine intensive Lehrtätigkeit an zahlreichen Universitäten und Reservaten in den USA aus. 1980 verlieh ihm die University of Idaho das Master`s Degree in English and Fine Arts.
