Our first journey leads us to the Navajo Nation in the Four Corner´s Area of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado in the USA. We are invited to the Drama and Fine Art Festival at the Red Mesa High School in New Mexico around Easter of the year 2000. We meet students and their teachers, join the festival, interview Barney Bush, meet Blackhorse Mitchell for the first time. The outcome: many new friends and – this film.

Unsere erste Reise führt uns in die USA zur Navajo Nation in der Four Corner´s Area von New Mexico, Arizona, Utah und Colorado. Wir sind zu Ostern des Jahres 2000 zum Drama and Fine Art Festival an der Red Mesa High School in New Mexico eingeladen. Wir treffen Schüler und ihre Lehrer, nehmen am Festival teil, interviewen Barney Bush, treffen Blackhorse Mitchell zum ersten Mal. Das Ergebnis: viele neue Freunde und – dieser Film.

When you tell someone that you are going to the Navajo reservation you are immediatly confronted with questions and statements which are heavily distorted by the images we all have been fed by literatur and the media in general. This is no surprise because only few òutsiders have had the opportunity to learn about the reality of native people in US-Reservations.

The reasons are varied.

First, not many really bother. The Rez is no bullshit tourist destination with easy access infrastructure for thrill seekers  and mysty-eyed esoteric freaks.

Two, those who have tried were often disappointed by that fact that their expectations blew up in their faces and that the keepers of the land are careful with visitors – and who could blame them when we look at history…

Third, the Rez is not a Zoo where the last remains of a nearly  extinct species can be stared at, but the home of people with a cultural background very different to yours and mine.

Of course we are all equal  but we are not the same! That is the beauty of it all.

Wenn Sie jemandem sagen, dass Sie in das Navajo-Reservat gehen, werden Sie sofort mit Fragen und Aussagen konfrontiert, die stark verzerrt sind durch die Bilder, die uns alle von der Literatur und den Medien im Allgemeinen gefüttert werden. Dies ist keine Überraschung, da nur wenige Außenstehende Gelegenheit hatten, etwas über die Realität der Ureinwohner in den US-Reservaten zu erfahren.

Die Gründe sind vielfältig.

Erstens stören sich nicht viele wirklich daran. The Rez ist kein Bullshit-Touristenziel mit leicht zugänglicher Infrastruktur für Nervenkitzel-Suchende und geheimnisvolle Esoterik-Freaks.

Zweitens waren diejenigen, die es versucht haben, oft enttäuscht von der Tatsache, dass ihnen ihre Erwartungen ins Gesicht gesprengt wurden und dass die Hüter des Landes vorsichtig mit Besuchern sind – und wer könnte es ihnen verübeln, wenn wir die Geschichte betrachten …

Drittens ist das Rez kein Zoo, in dem die letzten Überreste einer fast ausgestorbenen Art zu bestaunen sind, sondern das Zuhause von Menschen mit einem kulturellen Hintergrund, der sich von meinem und meinem sehr unterscheidet.

Natürlich sind wir alle gleich, aber wir sind nicht gleich! Das ist das Schöne an allem.
